Today, the Ocean City area continues to sprawl westward across the Assawoman Bay and toward the town of Berlin and the community of Ocean Pines. Dating back to the late 1700s, Berlin for years has offered a nice side-trip escape from sunburned days on the beach. Located just seven miles from Ocean City, Berlin is home to a revitalized historic, downtown commercial district adjacent to a similarly historic residential community. A visit to Berlin will be in the form of a heritage tour from three distinct periods: Federal, Victorian and 20 th Century. It has been designated over time as a “Main Street Community” by the state of Maryland due in large part to its revitalization efforts.
